The city of New Britain has received a $2 million grant to remediate a contaminated site at 221 South St., the former home of New Britain Machine Co.
The abatement project will help prepare a 123,000-square-foot building on the 55-acre, privately owned site, for adaptive reuse, city officials said.
The city envisions revitalizing the property, known as New Britain Business Park, for manufacturing, research and development, and warehousing use.
“Our city’s rich industrial history correlates directly with the amount of old, underutilized Industrial spaces strewn throughout town,” Mayor Erin E. Stewart said. “Brownfield grants like this one provide us with the financial resources needed to create opportunities to reimagine these factory spaces and position them for unique redevelopment opportunities, breathing new life into buildings and neighborhoods.”
Gov. Ned Lamont announced the award last week as part of $18.8 million in state environmental cleanup grants for 23 properties across the state.
The city of New Britain, in partnership with the Industrial Reality Group, which represents the owner of the New Britain Business Center, applied for the funds through a competitive grant process.
