Cannabis retailers operating in New Britain could stay open until later in the evening if a rule change being considered by the city is adopted.
A subcommittee of the city’s Common Council is considering an ordinance change that would move allowable operating hours for cannabis retailers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. under current rules to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The subcommittee is also considering doing away with a restriction requiring cannabis retailer signs be no larger than 12 square feet in area. The proposed change would make cannabis retailer signs subject to the same rules as other businesses.
“Although an individual business brought the issue to the City’s attention, the amendment is an attempt to reflect regulatory practices consistent with other area municipalities that have later morning and later evening operating hours for cannabis dispensaries,” Rachel Zaniewski, communications director for New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart, wrote in an email response to questions.
The Common Council Zoning Subcommittee will take up the proposal during its April 8 meeting. The subcommittee could refer it back to the full council for adoption.
New Britain is currently home to the Nova Farms dispensary on Hartford Road. The company currently lists its hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
