New Britain downtown czar bolts to Mass.

Donald Courtemache, who has run the New Britain Downtown District the past nine years, is leaving for a similar post in Springfield.

Courtemache’s last day is Oct. 13, after which he becomes executive director of the Springfield Improvement District.

The New Britain district board said today it will launch a search for his successor in 30 days. New Britain landlord and district board member Avner Krohn heads the search committee.

Courtemanche joined the district as executive director in March 2000. During his tenure, the downtown grand list more than doubled, and he was instrumental in opening the Downtown Visitors Center and Downtown Gallery, the board said.

He also implemented daily supplemental cleaning of downtown streets and sidewalks, officials said.

“He has helped to initiate & implement several new courses of action for the district and leaves us in a better position than we have ever been,” said Downtown District Chairman James Calciano.
