New billionaire rankings include 15 CT residents, including 2 newcomers

There are a record 2,781 billionaires in the world – 141 more than last year, and 26 more than in 2021. Their aggregate net worth is $14.2 trillion, according to Forbes recently released World’s Billionaires List for 2024.

The United States has a record of 813 billionaires, whose net worth totals $5.7 trillion, according to Forbes.

Of those, 15 reside in Connecticut.

The newcomers are Doug Ostrover of Greenwich, and Michael Rees of New Canaan, the latter of whom was on the list previously, but dropped off, and returned this year.

Ostrover and Rees co-founded Blue Owl, an investment firm specializing in private credit with $165 billion in assets under management, in 2021.

Ostrover, 61, has a net worth of $2.8 billion; Rees, 49, has a net worth of $1.7 billion, according to the data.

Steve Cohen, who oversees Point72 Asset Management, a $30.6 billion hedge fund, stands his ground as Connecticut’s wealthiest resident. The 67-year-old Greenwich resident has a net worth of $19.8 billion and is the 97th wealthiest person in the world, according to the rankings.

He also owns the New York Mets.

The wealthiest person in the world is Bernard Arnault, who oversees the LVMH empire of 75 fashion and cosmetics brands, including Louis Vuitton and Sephora, according to Forbes. The 75-year-old resident of Paris has a net worth of $233 billion.

Elon Musk, 52, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, ranks No. 2 with a net worth of $195 billion.

In 2019, Connecticut had slightly more billionaires – 17.
