NEAT’s healthy diet for Middletown youth

The North End Action Team’s North End Farmers Market is launching a program to bring free, farm-fresh produce to roughly 80 Middletown children per week this summer.

Funded by the Community Health Center Inc., the Kids Market program includes children attending the free summer lunch program at the Salvation Army on Main Street and the new Summer Arts and Science Camp at the Green Street Arts Center, both within blocks of the market, located at 575 Main St.

Each program will bring these kids to the market weekly, where North End Action Team (NEAT) will supply them with wooden market coins to purchase food from any of the produce vendors.

As children “purchase” fresh produce at the market each week, they will learn about nutrition, business, environment, budgeting, cooking and math.

“We want kids to know what good food is,” said Izzi Greenberg, NEAT executive director.  “We want them to be excited by it and bring that enthusiasm back home to share with their families.  This is an opportunity to change the way kids eat, creating a healthier lifestyle that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.”

NEAT created the North End Farmers Market to increase access to fresh, affordable, local food.
