Nearly 300K CT homes can’t afford energy bills

More than 295,000 Connecticut households can’t afford their energy bills, according to the Home Energy Affordability Gap report released by Bloomfield nonprofit Operation Fuel.

The affordability gap totals $700 million for those households at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, meaning each Connecticut low-income household owes $2,363 in energy bills.

Despite this high affordability gap, Connecticut only has $76 million in funds annually to help these households pay their bills, according to Operation Fuel.

The report considered energy bills unaffordable if they exceeded 6 percent of the household’s annual income.
