Navy scraps $495M submarine repair

The U.S. Navy has decided to not pursue the $490 million repair on the arson-destroyed USS Miami submarine, whose home base is Groton, the U.S. Department of Defense announced.

The Navy already paid $95 million to Groton-based Electric Boat to develop plans to restore the submarine to working order. However, due to the sequestration cuts, the Navy decided it could not afford the repair. The USS Miami had five deployments remaining.

The damage was caused by a civilian painter and sandblaster, who started the fire so he could get out of working that day. He pled guilty to the May 23 fire and is serving 17 years in prison.

The USS Miami, a nuclear attack sub, was drydocked in Kittery, Maine when the fire broke out.
