Navy official says sub coating issues fixed

A Navy procurement official says problems with peeling hull coating on early Virginia-class submarines -built at Electric Boat in Groton — have been addressed, The Associated Press reports.

Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy told The Daily (Va.) Press that the coating appears to be adhering better to newer submarines.

The Navy began an investigation after several Virginia class submarines experienced major hull coating failures over several years.

McCoy says the investigation didn’t find any single cause for the problem. But going forward, he says he’s confident the subs will retain their coating.

The submarines are built in a partnership between Northrop Grumman Corp.’s Newport News shipyard and General Dynamics Electric Boat.
