Navy fined by EPA for hazardous waste violation at submarine base

A hazardous waste complaint involving the Naval Submarine Base in Groton has been settled with the Environmental Protection Agency.

The U.S. Navy will pay a $37,059 fine and build a $114,000 air conditioning system at the main building where hazardous waste from submarine and base operations is stored.

The agreement with the EPA involves improper handling of hazardous materials in 2006. The new equipment will keep the building cool so that ignitable materials stored there do not become overheated and catch fire.

During inspections in 2006, the EPA documented that temperatures reached 95 degrees inside the building. The EPA say the building lacked adequate ventilation.
