Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s April signing of a law banishing Connecticut’s death penalty drew plaudits Monday from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People at the opening of its annual convention in Houston.
The NAACP said Malloy showed leadership in repealing Connecticut’s capital punishment law with the stroke of his pen April 25. It replaced capital punishment with life in prison without the possibility of release.
Malloy was scheduled to address the group’s opening plenary session.
“Connecticut now stands as a beacon to other states that are seeking fair alternatives to the death penalty,” NAACP Connecticut State Conference President Scott X. Esdaile said in a statement.
