North Windham manufacturer United Abrasives has paid a $26,619 penalty and made $100,000 in improvements to resolve allegations it violated federal and state hazardous waste laws.
In 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency filed a complaint against the company for failures to notify EPA of its hazardous waste activity, develop a hazardous waste plan, and properly manage waste like fluorescent light bulbs.
United Abrasives manufactures a variety of bonded abrasives including grinding wheels and adhesive disks. The upgrades to its facility included eliminating the generation of waste epoxy resins produced in the manufacturing process.
The company and EPA reached this settlement in September, and United Abrasives had finished the required work and paid the penalty in March.
