Multi-unit developments lift May CT housing permits

Housing permits issued across Connecticut increased 11.6 percent in May, thanks to an increase in the number of developments with two or more dwelling units, according to state officials.

The 128 cities and towns tracked by the U.S. Census Bureau issued 424 permits, up from 380 in May 2013, according to the Department of Economic and Community Development. While multi-unit housing development increased from 93 to 221, permits for single-family homes and one-unit condos fell from 287 to 203.

For the first five months of the year, 1,713 permits have been issued, which is an increase of 14 percent over the same prior-year period.

It’s the second year-over-year increase of 2014. In January, permits more than doubled to 533 compared to January 2013.
