Multi-family housing drives CT new construction

Multi-family units continued to comprise a majority of new home construction permits in June, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

There were 508 permits issued during the month, down from 740 in May, and the second-highest for the year. Prior-year comparisons are unreliable because the Census Bureau now only counts 104 Connecticut communities, compared to 128 last year, when it recorded 1,317 total permits.

Housing units that were part of 5-plus-unit developments represented nearly 59 percent of total permits issued last month. It was the fourth time this year that multi-family was above 50 percent of total permits.

Single-family homes were 38 percent of total permits for the month, according to the data.
