M&T Bank has opened a full-service branch at 25 Pineridge Road in Torrington, months after shutting an in-store location a few miles away.
The 2,400-square-foot freestanding building offers teller service, a drive-thru, a walk-up ATM and private offices for consultations, the Buffalo, New York-based bank said Thursday. The branch handles everyday banking, mortgages and small business lending.
The opening follows M&T's decision in January to close 10 branches inside Connecticut Stop & Shop stores, including one at 931 Torringford St. in Torrington.
The bank said at the time that it had signed leases for new locations in both Torrington and Waterbury, where a supermarket branch on Reidville Drive was also slated to close, and that it would install standalone ATMs at the affected stores.
The new Waterbury branch has since opened, with a ribbon cutting planned for October, according to the bank.
M&T became a major player in Connecticut through its 2022 acquisition of Bridgeport-based People's United Bank, a deal that left it with one of the largest branch networks in the state. It now operates 106 branches in Connecticut.
As of June 30, 2026, the bank ranked third in Connecticut deposits with $18.9 billion, or 10.5% of the market, trailing Bank of America and Webster Bank, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data.
The bank has continued to add standalone offices in the state. It opened a seventh full-service branch in Bridgeport earlier this year, a 1,538-square-foot location on the city's East End.
