Elizabeth M. Gemski has joined the government affairs group of Murtha Cullina LLP as a consultant. She has been working as state vice president of health and advocacy initiatives, state director of government relations and advocacy and state coordinator of grassroots advocacy with the American Cancer Society offices in Warwick, Rhode Island, and Boston. Prior to her work with the American Cancer Society, Ms. Gemski worked in Washington, D.C. at Capitol Associates, Inc.

The firm has more than 115 attorneys in six offices throughout Connecticut and MassachusettsNutmeg State Federal Credit Union has hired Mark Bosse as vice president, sales and service. Bosse previously served as chairman of the board for Nutmeg State Federal Credit Union. That position will be assumed by Michael Petti. In his new position, Bosse will oversee business development, branch operations, and sales and service training. For 15 years, Bosse, a resident of Berlin, has been a volunteer at the Rocky Hill credit union, serving on the Board of Directors as chairman and vice chairman, and on the supervisory committee as chairman. Nutmeg State Federal Credit Union is a member owned, not-for-profit, financial cooperative. Since its founding in 1936, Nutmeg State has grown to be one of the largest credit unions in the country.

Douglas Kartsen has joined NorthStar Wealth Partners in West Hartford as a wealth advisor. Kartsen, who holds the certified financial planner designation, spent the past 12 years providing investment, income and estate planning services as an advisor at Edward Jones and held senior banking and investment positions at Sovereign Bank and HSBC. At HSBC, he was head of investments and wealth management for sub-Saharan Africa.

Premier Limousine and Bus Lines, the largest chauffeured limousine service in Central Connecticut, has named John P. Backiel as its chief financial officer. Backiel, a certified public accountant, will be based at the company’s Berlin headquarters.

Walk Connecticut has hired Georgette Yaindl as its first full-time executive director. Yaindl, who is relocating from Honolulu, will take over from MaryEllen Thibodeau who has served as the organization’s part-time executive director for the past 12 months and will continue to serve as a member of the Board of Directors. She is returning to Connecticut where she had served as the first executive director of the Connecticut Bicycle Coalition. She left that post in 2000 to work for the Hawaii Bicycling League as its community liaison. In 2010, Bike Walk Connecticut (formerly named Central Connecticut Bicycle Alliance) expanded its role to become the only statewide organization advocating for a bike and walk friendly Connecticut.

Rich Coan has been promoted to senior service technician at TAB Computer Systems of East Hartford. Coan holds a number of industry certifications and has worked in the IT field for over 25 years. Prior to joining TAB, he was a partner and systems developer with a Hartford area programming firm.

Smith Brothers Insurance in Glastonbury and East Hartford has announced five hires. Nick Zullo was named special account producer in the East Hartford office. Matthew Cowles was named retirement specialist. Patrick Kiernan was named servicing producer in the Financial Services Division. Jamie Applegarth was named commercial lines technical assistant. And Lesley Reece was named commercial lines account manager. Prior to joining Smith Brothers, Zullo was with State Farm Insurance, Cowles was with Principal Financial Group, Kiernan was with Diversified Group Brokerage, Applegarth was with MassMutual, and Reece was with The Hartford.

Prudential Premier Homes in Torrington has named broker Rob Giuffria as president. Giuffria, who has been vice president for PPH for four years, leads brokerage sales and marketing and its Executive Relocation Group for the state.
