Rick C. Parmelee and Anthony J. Switajewski have been elected partners at BlumShapiro. Both are CPAs. Parmelee joined BlumShapiro in 2002 as a member of the firm’s accounting and audit practice. He services the firm’s automobile dealer and employee benefit plan clients. Switajewski joined BlumShapiro in 2004 as a member of the firm’s tax practice and was promoted to tax principal in 2008. He specializes in multi-state tax consulting and planning for the firm’s business and individual clients. Kathy Athorne has joined Filomeno & Co. in West Hartford. She brings 10 years’ experience to the firm’s audit practice. Most recently, Athorne served as a CPA at a Hartford area firm where she was responsible for accounting and general taxation, financial statement reporting, consulting, accounting policies and procedures, training and supervision, budgeting, scheduling and business process improvements. Athorne is a member of the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants and has served as treasurer for the Rockville Community Alliance since 2006.

Klingberg Family Centers has appointed David H. Tompkins as vice president for education, child placement, and group care. He fills the position previously held by Steven A. Girelli, who has become president/CEO. Tompkins has served in leadership roles at child serving agencies in Connecticut for more than 20 years including the Children’s Behavioral Health Advisory Committee, where he is co-chair; the Greater Middlesex Community Collaborative, where he served as the co-chair; the Connecticut Association of Nonprofits for whom he chairs the Children’s Council; and the board of the Connecticut Healthcare Workers Compensation Trust. He also was named Newington Volunteer of the Year in 2004. Klingberg Family Centers is a century-old private, nonprofit agency serving more than 3,000 children and families across Connecticut.

Richard D. Morris has been named controller at Teddy’s Transportation System Inc., a global ground transportation company based in Norwalk and parent company of Hartford’s King Limousine. In this new position, Morris will be responsible for oversight of the company’s financial operations, budgeting, balance sheet including receivables, and P&L statement. Prior to joining Teddy’s Transportation System, Morris had been working as an independent financial services consultant. Previously he was employed at Kodak (formerly Polychrome Graphics) in Norwalk, where he was a senior financial analyst.

Eric J. Dale, chair of the business transactions group at Robinson & Cole LLP, was the only lawyer selected to serve as a member of the newly created Connecticut Small Business Advisory Board. The board is composed of business leaders who give feedback to lawmakers about ways to improve the business environment and provide guidance on the resources available to small businesses. Also, the law firm elected of six new counsel Cynthia R. Christie in the employee benefits and compensation group; Melissa M. Mack, in the tax-exempt organizations group; John A. Poakeart, in the environmental and utilities practice group; Elizabeth M. Smith, the labor and employment group; Melissa Sullivan, in both the products liability and subrogation group as well as the commercial litigation group; and Deborah A. Vennos, in the insurance/ reinsurance, environmental, and utilities practice groups.

The law firm of Reid and Riege has added four new associates — Robert Kazior, John W. Larson, Christine M. Miller and Edward B. Spinella. They all join the firm’s Hartford office. Kazior, Miller and Spinella are members of the firm’s corporations and business organizations department and Larson is with the firm’s litigation department.

Marketing communications agency Cronin and Company LLC has promoted Gary Capreol to senior vice president, director of media and analytics as part of the firm’s expansion into providing analytics for its clients. Capreol had been overseeing the media department as vice president, executive media director. The analytics offering includes reporting and analysis, search engine optimization and web analytics. Capreol joined Cronin in 2006. Throughout his career, Capreol has been involved in all aspects of media planning, from planner and buyer to seller and client. Prior to Cronin, Capreol was with Bates USA and Initiative Media. Founded in 1947, Cronin and Co. is a full-service agency with over $70 million in capitalized billings.

Frank T. Waters has been hired as executive director of the Acorn Insurance Alliance. He is a founding member of Acorn Insurance Alliance and will continue to serve as president of Alton E. Woodford Inc., an independent agency in West Hartford. Waters has more than 40 years of industry experience. He began his career at Aetna Property & Casualty and joined the Woodford Agency in 1977, subsequently purchasing the agency in 1982. Acorn Insurance Alliance is a statewide group of independent insurance agencies, including Ahrens, Fuller, St. John & Vincent Inc. in Suffield; Archambault Insurance Inc. in Chester; Roland Dumont Agency Inc. in Bristol; Elliott Insurance Group in Southington and Middletown; Thomas Fahy Insurance Associates in West Hartford; Lindquist Insurance Associates Inc. in New Britain and CPM Insurance Services Inc. in Cheshire.

TAB Computer Systems of East Hartford has hired Apple specialist Michael Vardalto assist the firm’s client base with Apple technical support. Vardal comes from the Hartford Board of Education, where he was part of a team that supported over 9,000 computers in the Hartford School system.

The Law Offices of Carter Mario Injury Lawyers has added Annette Smith and Michelle Morrell to the firm’s staff of attorneys. Smith will serve in the firm’s New Britain office as the pre-litigation attorney. She comes to from the Law Office of Cheryl E. Johnson in Waterbury where she served as a paralegal before earning her law degree. Morrell joins the firm as a litigation attorney, splitting time between both the Milford and New Britain offices. She comes from the Law Offices of Vincent J. Mase in New Haven where she served as a litigation associate.
