Adding Value by Building Up
When you have been in the telecommunications business since 1979, change becomes the norm. That certainly is true at Mountaintop Enterprises Inc., which is managed by Mountaintop Services Inc.
“Watching the changes over the years and staying current has been amazing to see,” says Milton Hathaway, founder and president at the company, which is based in Bolton.
“We started with pagers, a radio station, UHF/VHF, a fire station, and now we are on to 5G and microwave. We are right on top of this development, as well as the challenges carriers face to still offer service to those 4G customers.”
“Telecommunications is a constantly changing business,” Hathaway continues, adding that another major development has been fiber optics technology and macro/ microcell technology. “Our carriers are constantly upgrading their equipment and contracts. We stay current and up to date with the latest technologies in our industry.”
As a full-service telecommunications company, Mountaintop Services handles acquisition of tower sites, marketing, and management.

“Basically, we turn non-producing assets into significant and sustainable revenue streams,” Hathaway explains. “The organization continues to be a leader in the rapidly growing field of telecommunication property management.”
With decades of experience, the company has access to top attorneys who specialize in telecommunications and land use, locally and nationally. “We have years of experience developing project sites,” Hathaway says.
“We have professionals who understand zoning and expert office staff to ensure that projects run smoothly. We work with the best installers in the tower business. We use the best security monitoring company to monitor our sites. We have established strong relationships with the major carriers and are constantly researching new business opportunities with our team.” The company was founded in 1979, when Hathaway created Mountaintop Enterprises Inc. on the side while working full time at Hartford National Bank and Trust Co.
Hathaway, who graduated from the University of Hartford with a business degree, received his Master’s Degree from the University of North Dakota while serving full-time in the United States Air Force (USAF). After 28 years in the USAF, Hathaway retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Pentagon. Mountaintop Enterprises Inc. operates two telecommunications towers in Bolton, both of which have been transitioning to 5G cellular service.
By 1993, Hathaway had founded Mountaintop Services Inc., which has managed and developed a telecommunication facility in a church steeple in Hartford, several tower sites in Massachusetts, towers in Bolton, Connecticut, and a tower in Vernon, Connecticut.
“We work with all the major carriers,” Hathaway says. “Creating and developing locations for cell phone service has been a necessity in our ever-changing and developing world.”
And that is the playbook for the future, too.
“Our plans are to continue to help more property owners develop and preserve their land,” Hathaway says. “We also use existing structures such as buildings, church steeples, chimneys, and billboards. It is amazing to see all the directions the business can go and how it can mutually benefit all those involved.”
