Most Northeast employers still skittish

Most Northeast employers remain cautious about the year ahead and expect limited hiring, according to a survey by Right Management.

Right Management, a unit of Manpower Inc., surveyed more than 700 firms across the U.S., including 71 in the Northeast. The regional data closely mirror the national findings.

“Like most people, employers aren’t sure what to expect in the year ahead,” said Joe Johnson, Right Management’s talent management practice leader for the Northeast region.

With respect to their own organization, a majority (66 percent) of the region’s employers think they will do only nominal hiring, on an as needed basis, Johnson said.

There is at least one positive sign of corporate confidence, Johnson observed. “Three out of four regional employers plan to renew or step up their investment in developing talent, a hopeful sign organizations are shifting their 2011 focus from cost-containment to growth.”
