The number of 16-to-24-year-olds employed across the country ticked up in July, with labor force participation rates flat, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.
Employed youths numbered 19.7 million in July, up from 19.5 million a year ago.
The largest proportion of the employed youth population, 26 percent, had jobs in leisure and hospitality, while 19 percent worked in retail trade.
July is typically the month of the year with the greatest youth employment. From April to July, employment jumped by 2.1 million to 19.7 million.
The labor force participation rate for all youth — those working or looking for work — was 60.5 percent in July, the same as a year earlier.
