Athena Health Care will lay off 431 workers as it shutters two nursing homes in Bristol, according to a notice filed with the state Department of Labor (DOL) this week.
It has scheduled the closures for March 2025.
The financially troubled company announced the intended closures of Sheriden Woods and Countryside Manor in November; this week it gave details to the DOL on the number of jobs affected.
Athena says it is still waiting on written approval for the closures from the state Department of Social Services, but intends to complete the shuttering of the two facilities no later than March 22.
More than 200 residents will need to be relocated.
Athena says laid off employees will be given priority consideration for other jobs within its network.
These latest closures would leave Athena with six nursing homes in Connecticut. The company was once the largest chain in the state, operating 22 homes.
CEO Larry Santilli acknowledged the disruption to employees and residents when the move was announced in November.
“A combination of factors, including challenges facing skilled long term care nursing facilities like staffing, rising operating costs and other financial considerations along with the need for significant and costly updates to our building have left us no alternative but to seek closure of this facility,” Santilli said at the time.
The six facilities Athena still operates in Connecticut are: Bayview Health Care in Waterford, Litchfield Woods Health Care Center in Torrington, MeadowBrook of Granby, Northbridge Health Care Center in Bridgeport, Valerie Manor in Torrington and Wadsworth Glen in Middletown.
