New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says 46 drivers of tour buses, buses and taxis are being charged with holding commercial licenses even though they had other licenses suspended under different names, fallout from the March bus crash that killed 15 people returning from Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun casino, The Associated Press reports.
The driver crackdown makes use of facial recognition technology that matches photos of driver’s licenses issued under other names.
Cuomo tells The AP that the arrests were the result of partnerships with the New York City Police Department, U.S. Customs and prosecutors in several counties and boroughs.
New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says many of those charged obtained multiple licenses to collect benefits and conceal violent pasts.
The drivers’ licenses are suspended pending court action.
