More Hartford public housing slated for redo

The Chester A. Bowles public housing community in Hartford’s North End is next in line for a makeover, city officials say.

The city’s housing authority says it reached an agreement with Overlook Village Redevelopment Associates LP to redevelop the 61.5-acre, 410-unit Bowles Park into a mixed income residential development.

Work on a master redevelopment plan is underway, and will include input from residents and neighbors, officials said. No specific development timetable was disclosed.

The city also says it is formally accepting proposals to redevelop Westbrook Village, another North End housing development in the shadow of the University of Hartford. Westbrook has 360 units on about 65 acres off Albany Avenue.

City officials say redevelopment of both aims to spur additional development in their surrounding neighborhoods.

Bowles Park and Westbrook house low- to moderate-income households.

Overlook is a partnership of Richman Group Development Corp.; JHM Financial Group; Imagineers; and Nutmeg Planners.
