Contractors repairing the granite facade of the University of Connecticut law library have discovered more problems that could force cost overruns.
Steel reinforcing bars are missing in some sections of the wall. And parapets on roof peaks are unstable.
James P. Bradley, associate vice president for UConn’s architectural and engineering services, says workers found the problems with the missing reinforcing steel as they removed the facade. Workers using an imaging device found other sections also were missing, he said.
Bradley says the university has so far been able to cover the costs. But he says if more problems are found, the $19 million repair job will likely run over budget by as much as $800,000.
State officials are suing contractors and architects for more than $15 million to reimburse Connecticut for the construction problems associated with the 12-year-old building.
