Tuesday saw a major shakeup of the Massachusetts casino market as casino proposals from Mohegan Sun and a dog racetrack in East Boston were both defeated at the polls, the Boston Globe reported.
Palmer voters defeated Mohegan’s nearly $1 billion proposed casino, which would more than double the town’s tax base, by just 93 votes, with 66 percent of registered voters visiting the polls, the Globe said.
Mohegan is calling for a recount based on what it says was a faulty ballot machine, according to the Springfield Republican.
If those calls go unheeded, MGM’s Springfield proposal will be the sole remaining applicant in the running for a license in the western part of the state.
The East Boston casino developer, Suffolk Downs, told the Globe it would pursue a casino in nearby Revere instead.
Foxwoods’ hopes are still alive in Milford, Mass., where a local referendum has not yet been held. Foxwoods faces a hearing before the state’s gaming commission next week to determine its suitability as a license applicant.
