[Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include Foxwoods’ August slot revenue]
Uncasville resort casino Mohegan Sun reported slots revenues on Monday that largely held the line compared to last year, after months of steeper year-over-year declines.
Slot revenues at Mohegan were $56.2 million in August vs. $56.4 million in August 2013, a decrease of 0.3 percent.
Other year-over-year slot revenue comparisons had much steeper declines for Mohegan Sun so far this year. The July figures, for example, showed a 4 percent decline.
Revenues from slot machines are one of the economic indicators of how busy the casinos are, although other revenue streams like table games, poker rooms, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment all add to the top and bottom line of the casinos.
Mohegan’s rival, Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, said its slot revenue fell 3.3 percent over the year, from $48.6 million to $46.9 million. It’s handle fell from $586.8 million to $565.1 million.
As part of their agreement to operate in the state, both casinos must contribute a portion of their slots revenues to the state government general fund. In August, Mohegan contributed $14.1 million, a decrease of 2 percent from August 2013.
Meanwhile, Foxwoods will contribute $12 million, down from $12.5 million a year ago.
