Mohegan Sun on Thursday unveiled a rendering of its planned seven-story, 400-room hotel, which is slated to open in the fall of 2016.
Mohegan said Earth Tower will help it recapture some of the nearly half-million room nights it turned away last year, due to no vacancy.
The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority announced last month that it would offer $123 million in bonds to build the hotel, which is modeled after its existing 1,200-room Sky Hotel, which opened in 2002.
“The Earth Hotel could not come at a better time as we position ourselves for the increased regional competition and ensure that we continue to be the premier entertainment and gaming destination on the East Coast,” outgoing MTGA CEO Mitchell Etess said in a statement.
An impending casino gaming market in Massachusetts is expected to take a bite out of Mohegan’s revenues, adding to challenges posed by a growing number of Northeast casinos.
New York’s Kohn Pederson, designer of the Sky Hotel, is the architectural firm of record for the project, while North Stonington’s A/Z Corp. is the general contractor.
