Mohegan takes over Canadian casinos, entertainment complex

The tribal operators of Mohegan Sun have officially taken over operations of two casinos and an entertainment complex currently under development in Canada.

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE), overseers of its subsidiary casinos in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, said it received legal authority Tuesday to assume daily operations of Casino Niagara, Fallsview Casino Resort and the Niagara Falls Entertainment Centre. The 5,000-seat theater, adjacent to Fallsview Casino in downtown Niagara Falls, is expected to debut sometime this summer.

Last September, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. selected MGE to become its service provider operating the casinos and newly minted theater, which are known as the Niagara Gaming Bundle.

Fallsview Casino has more than 2.5 million total square feet, including 200,000 square feet of gaming space and more than 3,000 slot machines and 100 gaming tables.

Casino Niagara has a 95,000-square-foot gaming floor with 1,500 slot machines and 40-plus table games.

Also Tuesday, MGE named Christian Block as regional president responsible for day-to-day operations at its properties in Niagara Falls and South Korea, where it plans to build a $1.6 billion entertainment and gaming complex, luxury hotel, shopping center and 15,000-seat arena.

In Connecticut, MGE is joining forces with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which operates Foxwoods Resort Casino, to build a jointly run $300 million casino and entertainment complex in East Windsor.

MGE also owns and operates other gaming and entertainment resorts in New Jersey, Washington state, Pennsylvania and Louisiana. It also owns the Connecticut Sun, a professional women’s basketball team, and the New England Black Wolves, a professional lacrosse team.
