Mohegan Sun’s July slot revenues up slightly

Mohegan Sun posted a slight increase in July slot revenues during what was its second full month in operation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the month, Mohegan Sun, operated by Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE), said it recorded slot revenues of more than $47.5 million, up 1.7% from $46.7 million in July 2019.

The amount slot bettors wagered in July, known as the “handle,” was $549 million, down 3.7% from $570.2 million in the year-ago period.

MGE, which is required by a state gaming compact to pay 25% of its slot revenues to Connecticut’s General Fund, said it contributed more than $11.8 million to the state last month.

Monday’s report is good news for Mohegan, which reported a 3% dip in slot revenues in June after being temporarily closed in April and May as the novel coronavirus spread across Connecticut. In the first two weeks of March before the shutdown, its slot revenues plummeted 62% to $19.5 million compared to $51.1 million in the year prior.

MGE, which also operates casinos and resorts in Pennsylvania, Las Vegas and Canada, reopened its flagship venue in the Uncasville section of Montville on June 1, with dozens of restaurants, shops and clubs following new safety and social distancing measures.

In July, MGE made another change to its C-suite, naming Ray Pineault chief operating officer after he spent several months as regional president of Mohegan.
