LAS VEGAS — Mohegan Sun took home top awards in two categories in the inaugural Casino Entertainment Awards presented Wednesday night in Las Vegas.
The Mohegan Sun Arena was named the top casino arena/amphitheater, beating out the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas and Thunder Valley Casino Resort Amphitheater in Lincoln, Calif.
And Tom Cantone, senior vice president of sports and entertainment, was named the entertainment executive of the year. Robyn Smith of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi and David Swift of the Pala Resort & Casino in California, were the other finalists.
In accepting the trophies, Mohegan Sun President and CEO Robert Soper credited Cantone with doing the hard work that kept the arena humming with A-list acts throughout the year. In fact, Soper said, Cantone missed the presentation because he was back in Uncasville working on more entertainment deals.
Cantone joined Mohegan Sun in 2007 and was recently promoted to senior vice president of sports and entertainment at all Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority properties.
Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den also was a finalist for best showroom/theater, an honor that went to Vinyl at the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas.
The awards program was staged in conjunction with the Global Gaming Expo, being held this week at The Venetian resort in Las Vegas.
