Mixed-use 255-unit apartment development approved in Southington

A mixed-use apartment and retail complex in Southington has been approved with several traffic-related stipulations.

Texas-based developer and applicant Anthony Properties LLC and Brian Shiu are looking to build 255 apartments in eight buildings at 1303, 1193, and 1177 West St., with 17,500 square feet of commercial space over two buildings at the corner of West Street and Curtiss Lane.

The approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission came with several stipulations from multiple town departments that had concerns with traffic flow, site lines, and emergency vehicle access.

Each building will have some affordable apartments, with the project including a total of 26 – or 10% – such units.

Representatives for Anthony said the project fits in with the town’s need for affordable units for young families and the aging population.

The project also contains a pool and clubhouse.

Anthony Properties said it would purchase the roughly 40-acre property currently owned by the trust of Roger C. Toiles of Southington, once the plan is approved. The land currently contains vacant commercial buildings.
