The minimum wage climbs from $9.60 to $10.10 an hour on Jan. 1, the result of a new law signed by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in 2014.
This is the third-stage of a three-stage schedule of increases from $8.70 an hour, said Malloy this week as he reminded the public of the upcoming adjustment. Connecticut was the first state in the country to adopt legislation establishing a $10.10 minimum wage.
Malloy and Connecticut Department of Labor Commissioner Scott D. Jackson said the “modest increase” in fair wages will provide an income boost for working families but also stimulate the economy.
“No one who works full-time should live in poverty,” Malloy said in a statement. “When workers earn more money, businesses will have more customers.”
According to a July 2015 study conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor, three out of five small business owners with employees support a gradual increase in the minimum wage.
