Federal regulators on Tuesday began a special inspection at Millstone Nuclear Power Station, following a reactor-coolant leak earlier this month.
The Waterford plant, which is owned by Dominion, informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Oct. 4 that reactor coolant was leaking from a relief valve at a rate of more than 25 gallons per minute.
Plant operators isolated the shutdown cooling system from the reactor coolant system in order to make repairs.
The incident, which lasted 90 minutes, qualified as an “unusual event,” which is the lowest of four levels of NRC emergency classifications.

NRC said two of its inspectors are reviewing operator response, equipment performance and other factors.
The agency will issue a report within 45 days.
