Connecticut is closing in on its $55 million in anticipated funding from a legal settlement with automaker Volkswagen.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced this week that it has submitted to paperwork to a California federal court overseeing the distribution of the settlement funds, which came after VW admitted in late 2015 to installing software in its cars that was designed to cheat emissions tests.
The court’s trustee has until Jan. 30 to designate beneficiaries.
State officials released a draft plan early this year for what they want to do with the money. The plan focuses on improving air quality through the deployment of electric vehicles and other strategies.
DEEP expects to revise the plan by mid-2018, with public input. The state will submit that plan to the court in advance of its first funding request.
The agency expects to dole out the money as grants after a competitive solicitation for proposals.
