Midwestern sports architect wants to design Hartford stadium

Correction: The original version of this story inaccurately portrayed JCJ Architecture and Ballpark Design Associates as teaming with LeylandAlliance, Centerplan Cos., and another firm for the overall development of Downtown North. JCJ and Ballpark Design submitted a proposal strictly for the design of the stadium. JCJ is also part of a separate proposal with LeylandAlliance, Centerplan Cos. and Urban Design Associates for the overall development of Downtown North.

A Kansas City sports architect who designed multiple college and pro baseball stadiums is bidding to design Hartford’s minor league ballpark in Downtown North, sources said.

Martin H. Dinitto of Kansas City-based Ballpark Design Associates has partnered with JCJ Architecture of Hartford to design the stadium.

Theirs is one of a number of design proposals received by the city, which has not yet identified other architects interested in the project.

The design RFPs are separate from four proposals received by the city on Aug. 1 for the overall development of Downtown North.

JCJ is also a member of a team vying to design-develop the overall area. That team includes New York’s LeylandAlliance, Middletown’s Centerplan Cos., and Urban Design Associates of Pittsburgh, Penn, according to Peter Stevens, CEO of JCJ.

The group submitted one of four proposals to the city for the Downtown North development project.

Dinitto was design director for BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, N.C., home of the Charlotte Knights, a AAA team affiliated with the Chicago White Sox, according to his online biography. The stadium opened in March.

He also designed TD Ameritrade Park in Nebraska and was project director for Class AAA, AA and A parks in Indiana, Arkansas, Michigan and Kentucky, among others.
