Mid’town CPA firm GDS, Hamden’s Lipman merge

Middletown accountants Guilmartin, DiPiro & Sokolowski LLC has merged with Hamden accounting firm Lipman & Co. PC, quickening the pace of accounting consolidations in Connecticut and New England.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed Thursday.

GDS partner Mike Sokolowski welcomed aboard Lipman principals Michael B. Lipman, CPA and Cathy J. Forsberg, CPA, both certified public accountants. The 41-year-old firm is housed at 505 Main St.

In recent weeks, West Hartford accountants BlumShapiro and KPS & Co., among others, have merged with or acquired rival firms in and outside Connecticut just ahead of the onset of the peak income-tax filing season.

Forsberg is a past president of the Rotary Club of Hamden and the recipient of the prestigious “Service above Self” award from Rotary International, an award given to fewer than 150 Rotarians each year out of a membership of 1.2 million.

Lipman has served on various boards of directors for nonprofit organizations including Marrakech, Inc., Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven and the Hamden Chamber of Commerce. Both have professional affiliations with the Connecticut Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.

In addition to their careers in accounting, Lipman and Forsberg are founders and officers of the South Asia Pure Water Initiative Inc. a nonprofit that manufactures and distributes bio-sand water filters in India to people without potable water.
