Middlesex Hospital adds operating rooms

Middlesex Hospital in Middletown has expanded its surgical capacity with the addition of two new orthopedic operating rooms.

Middlesex Health, the health system overseeing its flagship Middletown hospital, on Monday unveiled the new orthopedic rooms that each span over 600 square feet.

The orthopedic operating suites will add to Middlesex Health’s joint and spine program, which include an inpatient unit and rehabilitation and homecare services.

The cost to build the operating rooms was about $3.2 million, a hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Surgeons at Middlesex helped design the operating rooms that officials said will better accommodate new technologies added over the last year.

That includes a new robotic tool, known as the NAVIO Surgical System, which enables surgeons to position a patient’s knee during partial or full replacement surgeries with precision.

The hospital said it’s also begun using a robotic 3-D navigation system called ExcelsiusGPS to perform minimally invasive spine surgery.
