Middlesex Health, which operates Middlesex Hospital, announced Tuesday it has received a $1 million donation from longtime supporters Sally and George Mayer of Essex.
The health system also named a pavilion at its Shoreline Medical Center to honor the couple’s decades of philanthropy and volunteer service. It held a ceremony Tuesday for the naming at the medical center at 250 Flat Rock Place in Westbrook.
The Mayers’ donation comes two months after the health system received the largest single charitable gift in its history, a $5.4 million donation from the Wright family, formerly of Essex, made via the Alfred R. Wright Trust.
The Mayers’ gift marks the latest contribution from the couple, who have supported Middlesex Health for more than 40 years as donors, volunteers, fundraising leaders and corporators.
Middlesex Health President and CEO Vincent Capece said the couple’s support has played a significant role in expanding healthcare services in the region.
The Mayers were key supporters of the Shoreline Medical Center and served as co-chairs of the capital campaign that raised more than $6 million to help construct the Westbrook facility. The medical center relocated there in 2014 from a smaller site in Essex.
The center provides emergency care, cancer treatment, diagnostic imaging and other outpatient services for residents of shoreline communities. The Mayers also helped establish the facility’s radiology department, which also bears their name.
Their philanthropic support extends beyond the Westbrook campus. In 2022, Middlesex Health opened The Mayer Center in Essex, which provides developmental services for children and adolescents with autism and other developmental challenges.
Middlesex Health, based in Middletown, operates Middlesex Hospital, three emergency departments, cancer centers, urgent care facilities and a network of primary care and specialty providers serving Middlesex County and shoreline communities.
