The Liberty Bank Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Middlesex Health to support new cancer screening and treatment technology and patient support services.
The Middletown-based health system announced the grant Monday during a dedication ceremony at the Middlesex Health Outpatient and Cancer Center on Saybrook Road. The health system also dedicated the Liberty Bank Pavilion in recognition of the donation.
The funding will support enhancements to the cancer center’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities, including artificial intelligence-powered breast and lung screening technology and advanced radiation therapy equipment.
It also will support services including nurse navigation, genetic counseling, integrative medicine and social work, which are intended to address patients’ medical as well as emotional, social and financial needs.
Middlesex Health President and CEO Vincent G. Capece Jr. said partnerships with organizations like Liberty Bank help the health system “bridge the gap in resources and continue to meet the evolving needs of our patients and community.”
Liberty Bank President and CEO David W. Glidden, who also serves as president of the bank’s foundation, said the prevalence of cancer was a major reason for the investment.
Middlesex Health operates two cancer center locations and Middlesex Hospital, a 275-bed nonprofit hospital in Middletown. The health system is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network and also operates three emergency departments and two urgent care centers.
Liberty Bank, also headquartered in Middletown, has more than $9 billion in assets and 51 retail banking offices in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Its charitable foundation was established in 1997 and has awarded $23 million in grants to nonprofits in the bank’s market area.
