A Middlefield emergency-response consultant was convicted Wednesday of filing false tax returns, prosecutors say.
Michael Callan, 70, waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty in Hartford federal court to one count of tax fraud for substantially underreporting his income, the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
According to investigators, the owner of consulting firm Callan & Co. was audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in May 2015 after failing to file tax returns from 2010 through 2015.
Amid the audit, Callan signed and filed returns for 2010 to 2012 tax that underreported income he received from his consulting practice, authorities said.
In all, he collected more than $276,000 in income from his business for the 2013 through 2015 tax years, but failed to file a return for each of those years, investigators said.
Callan has agreed to repay the IRS $153,636 in taxes owed, plus interest and penalties. He could not be immediately reached Wednesday for comment.
Free on bond, he faces up to three years in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 11.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Clark.
