Meriden to get $1.8M for cleanup ahead of planned apartment project

Meriden is set to receive $1.8 million in state funding to help remediate properties where a 92-unit apartment building is now planned.

According to information released by the office of Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, the money will be used to clean up two brownfield sites, 289 and 290 Pratt St., totaling 14.3 acres.

New York developer Steven Ancona plans to build the apartments and first-floor commercial space at 289 Pratt St., with additional parking for businesses at 290 Pratt St.

Ancona owns both properties.

According to Kenneth Boroson Architects, which has been hired to design the complex, the building will be four stories tall, with levels two through four accommodating 28-30 dwellings. The ground level will house the office of the property manager, as well as retail spaces such as restaurants and a salon/spa.

Proposed amenities include a gym, lounge and outdoor recreation.

The remediation money is part of a larger, $17.9 million spending package intended to rehabilitate blighted land across the state and return it to productive use.
