Meriden Lands Waterbury Manufacturer

Meriden recently used a low-interest loan and other incentives to entice a Waterbury wire maker to move its headquarters.

Accel International Holdings Inc., which manufactures high-performance wire, paid $3.6 million for a 150,000-square-foot building at 508 North Colony St., according to the Meriden Economic Development Office.

Thomaston Savings Bank and the city’s manufacturing assistance program financed the building purchase and improvements with a loan of up to $500,000 tied to the city’s bond rate of 4.7 percent, said Peggy Brennan, the city’s economic development director.

Accel also received a $15,000 grant to help cover moving expenses coupled with enterprise zone tax breaks, Brennan said.

Ragozzino Foods Inc. also received a $500,000 city loan to complete a 17,000-square-foot addition to its pasta and sauce plant on Chamberlain Highway, Brennan said. Castle Bank & Trust was involved in the financing.

The expansion added freezer and office space to its existing 26,000-square-foot production plant, where it intends to consolidate all of its Connecticut operations.
