Meriden asks BP for oil spill reimbursement

The City of Meriden wants BP to reimburse its police department because one of its officers was called to active duty by the U.S. Coast Guard after BP’s deepwater well explosion led to a massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Meriden is contractually obligated to pay the difference between the police officer’s salary and the Coast Guard. The city’s claim against BP totals $1,774.28 and includes overtime replacement costs, and the city may asks for more in the future as the officer is still on active Coast Guard duty.

The city claims the amount is reimbursable under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and the U.S. Coast Guard guidelines. Criteria for claim reimbursements include costs associated with removal and clean up and cost of increased public services.
