Meriden airport closed for $1.8M runway facelift

The Meriden Markham Airport is closed until October 21 as it undergoes a $1.8 million runway and taxiway overhaul.

Work on the federally funded project began Aug. 23 and is expected to take around two months, Constance Castillo, the airport’s manager, said in a phone interview.

Tilcon Connecticut Inc. won the contract for the project, which involves reconstructing the 3,100-by-75-foot runway, repaving the taxiway, and installing new LED lighting and signage. The airport is also getting new drainage around the runway and new reflective runway markings, Castillo said.

The runway’s last major facelift was in 2004, according to an announcement of the closing on the airport’s website. The project is part of the airport’s 20-year master plan.

Castillo said the overhaul is being funded entirely by a Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grant. The FAA this year waived the 10% local match that is typically required, she said.

Around 20 of the airport’s 68 tenants chose to remain at the airport during construction, according to Castillo, while the rest have temporarily relocated to nearby airports.
