Mission: Mercy Community Health is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Northeast Community, and is a member of Catholic Health East. MCH is a faith-based organization that promotes wellness, embraces diversity, and enhances quality of life. As a health care provider and in partnership with the communities we serve MCH respects and empowers individuals, restores health, provides comfort, and witnesses compassion and healing to all, especially the poor.
Background: For 129 years, Saint Mary Home has provided service to the sick, the poor and elderly in the greater Hartford community. Founded in 1885 by the Sisters of Mercy, Saint Mary Home’s numerous expansions and service additions have been made through the years in direct response to the needs of the community for housing and care for a growing elderly and underserved poor population. Saint Mary Home contains a significant portion of Mercy Community Health’s continuum of care: skilled nursing, the Adult Day Care Program, subacute/rehabilitative care, and assisted living services for residents of The Frances Warde Towers Apartments. Ninety-seven people live in the Apartments; more than 95 percent of these residents have physical, emotional and mental challenges that keep them from venturing beyond campus. Sixteen are transitioning from being homeless and an additional group has experienced homelessness in their lives. The McAuley, which opened its doors in 1988, is a Continuing Care Retirement Community, which promotes and fosters an independent lifestyle within a life care setting. A program is available for those McAuley residents who require some degree of assistance with daily living. Mercy Community HomeCare is a home health care agency, providing skilled nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapy, medical social work, home health aide and companion services. The Terrace at Mercyknoll, coming soon, will be West Hartford’s newest senior living community.
