Mercedes-Benz cranks up Harman’s new audio system

Stamford high-end audiomaker Harman International says it delivered to Mercedes-Benz its latest wireless “infotainment” system that lets passengers enjoy their own in-vehicle cocoons.

Harman said its NTG5 system will be installed on the German luxury marque’s S-class and mass-market C-class models delivered in early 2014. Prices for the system nor the value of the Benz contract were disclosed.

Among other things, the system’s advanced design means front- and rear-seat screens are networked so passengers can share text, video or images, Harman said. All screens support high-definition video, and the front dash screen additionally supports ‘split-view mode’, so driver and passenger can see different content on the same screen.

Another feature, tied to the car’s navigations setup, lets passengers follow the travel route on their screens that highlight points of interest along the way.

Harman’s brands include Harman-Kardon and JBL brand audio systems.
