Medtech startup secures key patent, makes first sales

A fledgling New Haven medical device maker secured a key patent and made its first sales of its main product, a tissue scaffold used in orthopedic surgery.

CEO Kevin Rocco of Biorez, a startup located in the District coworking space, announced Tuesday at a New Haven Chamber of Commerce event that his company had received notice from the U.S. patent office about its technology and gotten its first checks from sales of its BioBrace implant.

BioBrace can be used to reinforce tendon and ligament repairs in knee and shoulder injuries like torn ACLs (anterior cruciate ligament) and rotator cuffs, according to the company. Once soft tissue has regenerated, the device is naturally broken down by the body.

BIorez announced in May that it had obtained 510 (k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for two sizes of its “resorbable” BioBrace implant.

Based in the District at 470 James St., Biorez raised $3.5 million last September to advance the product toward commercial launch.
