Denver-based MediaNews Group has purchased Danbury-based The News-Times and a weekly, The Greater New Milford Spectrum, from Alabama-based Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.
A price was not announced, but The News-Times reported on its Web site that the sale exceeded $75 million.
MediaNews CEO Dean Singleton told employees of the sale on Friday, March 30. The company took over publication the next day.
“We wanted to be here, and we’re here,” Singleton said.
MediaNews owns the Connecticut Post and seven other publications in Connecticut. The nation’s fourth-largest newspaper chain now owns 62 daily newspapers, including The Detroit News and The Denver Post.
It was also reportedly a bidder for two other Fairfield County newspapers, The (Stamford) Advocate and Greenwich Time. Owner Tribune Co. announced a deal this month to sell the papers to Gannett Corp.
CNHI purchased The News-Times along with five other newspapers in October from Dow Jones & Co.
“While we were happy to have Danbury briefly in our CNHI family, this deal makes sense for everyone involved,” CHNI chief executive Donna Barrett said in a statement.
