Maximum unemployment benefit ticks up

The maximum weekly payment qualifying state residents can receive under the unemployment insurance program will grow slightly next month, the Department of Labor said.

After an annual revision process, the new maximum weekly unemployment benefit is $598, up from $594 this year and $590 the year before, according to DOL. Assessments on approximately 98,000 Connecticut employers fund the state program.

The new weekly maximum applies to claims filed for the benefit year starting on and after Oct. 4, and does not apply to anyone collecting prior to that date.

The state bases its revision on average manufacturing wages for fiscal year 2015.

The program’s weekly allowance of $15 per dependent, up to a maximum of $75, will remain the same, as it has since at least 2006.

Over the 12 months ended Aug. 31, 2015, the average weekly unemployment check in Connecticut was $326, up from $319 in the prior year, DOL said. The average length of payments was 17.9 weeks, down from 18 weeks.
