TITLE: Executive Director
COMPANY NAME: Journey Home, Inc.
COMPANY’S LOCATION: Hartford
RESIDENCE: Manchester
What do you do? I am the director of Journey Home, Inc., a nonprofit organization, leading the effort to prevent and end homelessness in the Greater Hartford region. As part of my work, I analyze programs and practices around the nation that have proven to be most effective, and then secure funding and create networks of partnering service organizations to implement programs locally. I also work to collect data and evaluate programs and ensure that the innovative solutions to homelessness that we deliver are improving the economic and social vibrancy of our communities. I also sing in the Hartford Chorale, a volunteer-based nonprofit which performs choral music for the Greater Hartford region.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years? I am a Home Missioner with the United Methodist Church, which means that I am a layperson who has made a lifetime commitment to work in ministries of love, justice, or service. In ten years, I hope to still be serving as a leader in the nonprofit sector and as a leader in the Church.
What is your biggest strength? My biggest strength is my determination, which is expressed through my willingness to work hard to achieve my goals.
Where do you go for new ideas? I believe that everyone has the ability to be creative and that we should exercise this ability frequently. I meditate for inspiration and I listen to those around me, especially the voices of those who I am working to serve.
What is the best advice you received? My parents taught me to always do my best. They never pressured me to be the best, but always encouraged me to do my best in everything I pursued. Knowing that I have done my personal best allows me the freedom to be pleased with my performance, regardless of how I compare to others.
What service or charitable cause has your attention? I am fortunate enough that my career pursuits are in harmony with one of the causes that I feel very passionate about — ending homelessness. Currently, Journey Home has most of my attention, but I am also lucky enough to be able to work in partnership with numerous other agencies and organizations doing great things in the Capitol Region and across Connecticut.
