The Milford, Mass., board of selectmen has voted to enter into host community agreement negotiations with Connecticut’s Foxwoods Resort and Casino, which hopes to open a casino in the Massachusetts town, The Associated Press reports.
The board voted 2-1 Monday to move forward.
Board Chairman William Buckley cast the dissenting vote, saying Foxwoods officials have not provided enough information about a proposed $1 billion, 660,000-square-foot resort. He has concerns about traffic, water and environmental impacts.
If an agreement is reached, a town referendum would be held in November and the land at the intersection of Interstate 495 and Route 16 would have to be rezoned. The casino also needs the approval of the state gambling commission.
The chief development officer of the project, David Nunes, says he was pleased with the vote and concerns would be addressed during negotiations.
